LLOYD (2001)
Although this is basically your typical preteen
slapstick comedy it does have its moments. And as such it is not bad though I
have seen better like the Home Alone series, Matilda, The
Little Rascals of 1994 and Dennis the Menace (the original with
Walter Matthau and Mason Gamble).
The title character as portrayed by Todd Bosley, an
eleven year old, who is the class clown but at the same time not the most
popular guy in junior high, falls in love with a girl. He then sets about trying
to woe her with the aid of his best (and only) friend. Without giving away too
much of the plot, I guess the message is that the best way to impress others is
just by being yourself.
Most preteens, especially those that see themselves as
being somewhat of a nerdy disposition, will be able to identify with Lloyd.
That being said, I still believe it is good enough to earn 3 out of 5
stars.

A PAINTED HOUSE (2003)
This movie is based on one of John Grisham’s lesser
known books by the same name. Other than most of his best sellers, this story
has got nothing to do with the law or the courts. Instead it takes place during
the fifties and is about the coming of age for nine year old Luke one summer on
their family cotton farm in the South.
It also does not boast an all-star cast except maybe
for Scott Glenn who is well known to older movie goers that might remember him
for his many roles in westerns. But it is a real treat to see a very young
Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson; The Three Musketeers) in one of his
earlier roles as Luke. And I think it is clear from his performance in this
film that it was inevitable that he would eventually become a star; one of the
few child actors that was able to successfully make the transition.
Some might find the pace of the movie a bit slow but
if you like a good old fashioned family drama, it is highly recommended. I gave
it 3 out of 5 stars.

I have seen this movie once or twice before on TV but
watching the DVD, I was reminded why I added it to my own collection: it is
damned good!
The story is about fourteen year old Walter that gets
unceremoniously dropped by his mother at the farm of his two very eccentric
uncles to spend the summer whilst she is supposedly off to college. They then
teach him what is to be a real man.
Yet another of my coming of age themed DVD’s but, like
I stated already, this one is really good. The two veteran actors portraying
the two uncles (Michael Caine and Robert Duvall) are excellent. But so is the
performance of Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense). It is nothing short
of amazing to see how he pulls off the transformation from scared insecure
little boy to self-assured young man.
I highly recommend this movie for most everyone and
awarded it 4 out of 5 stars.
