CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER (2011)
If you are familiar with the popular Marvel Comics you will most probably know that the Avengers series of books started way back in the 40's with Captain America. This also explains the title of this particular movie version which is part of a rather complicated set of series which includes The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Marvel's The Avengers all of which came out since about 2008.
When the character Captain America first appeared it was during WWII. It is therefor no wonder that he was portrayed as a fiercely patriotic young man that would do anything to get into the army, despite all his shortcomings. Eventually he is chosen to become this genetically enhanced super soldier that was able to almost single handedly defeat Hitler's top secret biological warfare division called Hydra. All of this is neatly explained and set out in this movie.
As usual, as with all of the Marvel films, the comic book pages burst onto the big screen in a most spectacular way. The plot is well thought out and the acting first rate. As far as super hero movies go, I give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (2014)
In this sequel to The First Avenger Chris Evans is back as Captain America. But as the previous movie focused more on the origins of one of the Avengers, this one takes place after the battle of New York which was portrayed in Marvel's The Avengers of 2012. However, even if you did not see that movie yet, don't worry. This one, as is the case with most of these films, sort of can stand on its own.
The action now moves to the present day as our hero continues his quest against the evil Hydra which by now had become a worldwide threat. Only this time he is aided by the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and the Falcon (Anthony Mackie). What might be a bit confusing though is how Nick Fury (played by Samuel L Jackson) and S.H.I.E.L.D fit into the scheme of things. But that, in turn, is all explained in the already mentioned Marvel's The Avengers film. So it might be a good idea to watch it after all...
Again everything is quite spectacular with a good story and actors. It is especially a treat to see the great Robert Redford in the roll of a baddie. I rate this one also 3 out of 5 stars.
