RED DAWN (2013)
When the original Red Dawn with Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen came out in 1984 the critics did not have much good to say about it. I disagreed and thought it was pretty good. However, when the remake appeared and their opinions tended to be about the same for this second attempt, I am afraid this time around I have to agree.
The premiss is the same: Suddenly one day America is invaded by a foreign power. Only in this movie it is North Korea whilst originally it was the Soviets. A bunch of teenagers under the leadership of an off-duty marine, Jed (Chris Hemsworth) escapes to the mountains where they make their stand against the enemy as a band of guerrillas called the "Wolverines".

Now, in the original it worked because it was made during the height of the cold war. But in this day and age it is a lot less probable. And that on its own sinks this 2013 remake of the movie. Even the capable young cast which, besides Hemsworth, includes names like Josh Peck and Josh Hutcherson is not able to savage it. I would therefor recommend you rather watch the original. And unlike the 1984 version that I rate 3 out of 5 stars I cannot give this rendition more than 2.
